ASPRS Adds LiDAR Sidebar to Reno Program

Bethesda, MD – As a result of intense interest in the future of the LAS format, the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) has decided to add a LiDAR session to the program for its upcoming ASPRS UAS Technical Demonstration and Symposium in Reno, NV. The LiDAR Sidebar will take advantage of the many experts that will be attending the conference to discuss the new compressed data formats that are attracting attention.

The session will take place at 6 pm on Wednesday 30 September 2015, shortly after the main conference closes. The format being planned is a panel discussion, with each topic introduced briefly by an invited expert, followed by discussion, where users of the various formats are welcome to express their thoughts. Likely topics include: the future of LAS; the rise of compressed LiDAR formats (multiple topics); OGC Point Cloud Domain Working Group; user expectations of LiDAR deliverables; applicability of LAS to terrestrial LiDAR, mobile mapping systems and the relationship to ASTM E57.

Please be sure to check out the full program for the second annual ASPRS UAS MAPPING 2015 RENO. Even if you cannot attend the one-day UAS Data Processing Workshop on Monday Sept 28 will want to arrive by 6PM in order to attend the welcoming social, sponsored by DroneDeploy. UAS INDUSTRY LEADERS PARTICIPATING IN UAS MAPPING 2015 RENO

Bethesda, MD – the second annual UAS technical symposium sponsored by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) announces that industry leaders in the UAS commercial industry are onboard for UAS MAPPING 2015 RENO! The program uniquely includes test course flights, data processing workshops, live demonstration, and a strong technical program focused on “best practice” for collection and processing of data from UAS.

Industry leaders are on the program to provide practical information on advances on sensors and platforms as well as soup-to-nuts details on planning a mission, controlling the mission, flying the mission, and processing the data. ASPRS is “The Imaging and Geospatial Information Society” and its members will be evaluating issues such as accuracy and data quality. By popular demand, the program will bring presentations highlighting real-world UAS mapping applications – transportation, survey design-build, infrastructure assessment, natural resource monitoring, and agriculture. Toward the end of the second day, a special panel of experts will provide “A Look Ahead” into technologies and developments that will impact UAS Mapping. Technical presenters include Mike Tully of Aerial Services, Inc., Dr. Bernd Lutz of Multirotor Service Drone, Baptiste Tripard of SenseFly, Wolfgang Juchmann of Velodyne, Antoine Martin of Pix4D, Keith Fieldhouse of Kitware, Tom Breen of Headwall-Photonics, Jeremy Eastwood of Drone Deploy, to name a few. Visionaries such as Jonathan Evans of Skyward, Keven Gambold of Unmanned Experts, Colin Snow of Drone Analyst, Stewart Baillie of Unmanned Systems Canada, and Don Weigel of Airware round out the technical program providing a vision of our UAS future in keeping with the symposium theme of “Change is in the Air”. The speakers listed are a subset of the full list of UAS industry leaders that are part of the technical program.

ASPRS-SPONSORED UAS DATA PROCESSING WORKSHOP – REGISTRATION OPEN

Following on the huge popularity of last year’s workshop, the second annual UAS Mapping Reno workshop for small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) will be held on Monday, September 28th at the Eldorado hotel. The workshop begins at 8:30 AM and concludes at 5:00 PM. The registration fee is $95 and includes lunch.

The workshop is aimed at providing prospective sUAS mapping users a very practical overview of the hardware and software components that comprise a metric data collection and processing system. The workshop will address topics such as:

  • An overview of sUAS hardware
  • Camera technology
  • Safety
  • Project geometric control and accuracy
  • Mission Planning
  • Flying a mission
  • Post-flight QC
  • Data processing
  • Data exploitation

Participants will be provided trial licenses of data processing and exploitation software as well as sample data sets. These licenses will be valid for several weeks following the event, allowing users to practice the techniques learned in the workshop.

Rather than a generalized approach to the topics, the workshop will use concrete examples of hardware and software. A realization of the PX4 autopilot and associated Mission Planner software will be presented as the control system. Discussions of GNSS hardware will cover current sUAS positioning products on the market. The software processing workflows will employ ubiquitous point cloud generation tools such as Pix4D and PhotoScan. At the conclusion of the day, participants will have the answers to questions such as:

  • Are my projects suitable for sUAS mapping?
  • Which is better – fixed wing or rotorcraft?
  • How do I safely operate an sUAS?
  • Does camera type matter?
  • Can I achieve my accuracy target with sUAS technology?
  • What are the options for geometrically controlling a project?
  • What software suite is required to obtain my desired products?

Please join us for this fast paced, informative session. Register Here.

UAS MAPPING 2015 – Call For Posters

The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) has released a call for posters for the fast-approaching UAS MAPPING 2015 RENO symposium which will be held at the Reno Ballroom in downtown Reno on September 29-30. The symposium is focused on education and collaboration on UAS technology and its application to the survey, mapping and remote sensing field. Industry experts from the private sector, academia and the government will present practical information on flight planning, mission control, acquisition and data processing for data analysis and production of mapping products. View Conference Program.

A poster session is currently being organized which will provide another means of information exchange in addition to the general sessions, exhibitions, networking sessions and live demonstrations already organized. Poster sessions will be held concurrently with blocks of time allocated for networking and exhibition. A committee will review the applications and select poster session presenters from the pool of applicants. Poster presenters will receive a discounted registration!

Posters are to follow guidelines for standard technical/research format.  The poster space is 48” height x 96” width with a recommended poster size of 42”x90”.

Please email poster applications to asprs.norcal@gmail.com. This is an excellent opportunity to highlight your UAS technologies, applications, research and development, and real-life project experiences!

See you in Reno!
