ASPRS Adds LiDAR Sidebar to Reno Program

Bethesda, MD – As a result of intense interest in the future of the LAS format, the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) has decided to add a LiDAR session to the program for its upcoming ASPRS UAS Technical Demonstration and Symposium in Reno, NV. The LiDAR Sidebar will take advantage of the many experts that will be attending the conference to discuss the new compressed data formats that are attracting attention.

The session will take place at 6 pm on Wednesday 30 September 2015, shortly after the main conference closes. The format being planned is a panel discussion, with each topic introduced briefly by an invited expert, followed by discussion, where users of the various formats are welcome to express their thoughts. Likely topics include: the future of LAS; the rise of compressed LiDAR formats (multiple topics); OGC Point Cloud Domain Working Group; user expectations of LiDAR deliverables; applicability of LAS to terrestrial LiDAR, mobile mapping systems and the relationship to ASTM E57.

Please be sure to check out the full program for the second annual ASPRS UAS MAPPING 2015 RENO. Even if you cannot attend the one-day UAS Data Processing Workshop on Monday Sept 28 will want to arrive by 6PM in order to attend the welcoming social, sponsored by DroneDeploy. Register now- https://uasreno.org/conference-registration/

LESS THAN A MONTH TO GO! UAS MAPPING 2015 RENO

Bethesda, MD – Only one month to go until the second annual American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) UAS MAPPING 2015 RENO! There are several UAS conferences this fall, so why should you attend the Technical Symposium and Demonstration organized by ASPRS? Here’s why:

  1. ASPRS is a professional organization uniquely qualified in aerial imaging and mapping. Our experts will be on-hand to explore with you the latest in UAS technology and applications.
  2. This program includes flights of an ASPRS test site which incorporates geodetic control and radiometric targets for analysis of UAS data.
  3. ASPRS is sponsoring a UAS Data Processing Workshop.
  4. The technical symposium and demonstration is providing public outreach to young people through inclusion of Nevada-area Civil Air Patrol cadets in the test site flights.
  5. In addition to a program focused on “best practice” for collection and processing of data, attendees will be treated to networking, social activities and live demonstrations.

If you haven’t registered – don’t wait, now is the time! https://uasreno.org/conference-registration/

ASPRS-SPONSORED UAS DATA PROCESSING WORKSHOP – REGISTRATION OPEN

Following on the huge popularity of last year’s workshop, the second annual UAS Mapping Reno workshop for small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) will be held on Monday, September 28th at the Eldorado hotel. The workshop begins at 8:30 AM and concludes at 5:00 PM. The registration fee is $95 and includes lunch.

The workshop is aimed at providing prospective sUAS mapping users a very practical overview of the hardware and software components that comprise a metric data collection and processing system. The workshop will address topics such as:

  • An overview of sUAS hardware
  • Camera technology
  • Safety
  • Project geometric control and accuracy
  • Mission Planning
  • Flying a mission
  • Post-flight QC
  • Data processing
  • Data exploitation

Participants will be provided trial licenses of data processing and exploitation software as well as sample data sets. These licenses will be valid for several weeks following the event, allowing users to practice the techniques learned in the workshop.

Rather than a generalized approach to the topics, the workshop will use concrete examples of hardware and software. A realization of the PX4 autopilot and associated Mission Planner software will be presented as the control system. Discussions of GNSS hardware will cover current sUAS positioning products on the market. The software processing workflows will employ ubiquitous point cloud generation tools such as Pix4D and PhotoScan. At the conclusion of the day, participants will have the answers to questions such as:

  • Are my projects suitable for sUAS mapping?
  • Which is better – fixed wing or rotorcraft?
  • How do I safely operate an sUAS?
  • Does camera type matter?
  • Can I achieve my accuracy target with sUAS technology?
  • What are the options for geometrically controlling a project?
  • What software suite is required to obtain my desired products?

Please join us for this fast paced, informative session. Register Here.

Meet the Symposium Committee and Moderators of the UAS Reno Symposium

‘Change is in the Air’ – The First of its kind UAS Symposium

”Change is in the Air.” This is the tagline of our fall symposium, which denotes the excitement and also the angst that goes along with change.

“What interests me most about the conference is the different types of people that will be there. It’s not just photogrammetrists, it’s not just law enforcement, it’s not just firefighters. It’s different types of people from the data collection side and the data consumption side, and it’s only really when you get those people together that you really start to talk about how do we create systems that are going to work well for all of these interests.” – Brandon Basso, PH.D., Senior R&D Research Engineer at 3D Robotics

Dr. Basso will be co-presenting the opening keynote, and also contributing as a panelist. Watch the full clip of his thoughts on why he’s excited to be a part of the ASPRS UAS Technical Demonstration and Symposium.

A full line-up of events is provided on the symposium website at http://uasreno.org.

EXPANSION OF LIVE DEMO OPPORTUNITES AT UAS MAPPING 2014 RENO

Reno, NV The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) has added an indoor rotary-wing UAV live demonstration to the UAS Technical Demonstration and Symposium being held in Reno Nevada on October 21 and 22. This indoor demonstration will be held in the evening of the first day of the symposium (Tuesday 10/21) following a fixed-wing live demonstration at the Nevada Test Site Stead Airport and following a networking social on the exhibition floor at the Reno Ballroom. It will be a jam-packed day of sessions and demonstrations culminating in an opportunity for hands-on and up-close flying of rotary-wing or copter unmanned vehicles.

The indoor UAV demonstration will be held at the spacious Reno Event Center located across the street from the symposium venue (Reno Ballroom) and the symposium hotel (The Eldorado). The arena floor at the Event Center is 256’ x 212’ with a 43’-high ceiling, easily accommodating the needs of the flight of small rotary-wing unmanned aircraft.

A full line-up of events is provided on the symposium website at http://uasreno.org. See you in Reno!

ATTENTION STUDENTS – Call for Posters

ASPRS has released a call for posters for the fast-approaching UAS MAPPING 2014 RENO symposium which will be held at the Reno Ballroom in downtown Reno on October 21 and 22. The symposium is focused on education and collaboration on UAS technology and its application to the survey, mapping and remote sensing field. Industry experts from the private sector, academia and the government will present practical information on flight planning, mission control, acquisition and data processing for data analysis and production of mapping products.

A poster session is currently being organized which will provide another means of information exchange in addition to the general sessions, exhibitions, networking sessions and live demonstrations already organized. Poster sessions will be held concurrently with blocks of time allocated for networking and exhibition. A committee will review the applications and select poster session presenters from the pool of applicants. (Only symposium registrants will be considered!)
